‘A Small World’ Peaking?

Hey New Yorkers,

Did you know there’s an social networking site that’s so exclusive you can’t even get invited unless you know a member who also has special ’invite privileges’?

Today, my friend Rachelle Hruska over at GuestofGuest posted an interesting piece on social networking site ‘A Small World’, essentially asking her readers if they thought it was “over” (and declaring it the online equivalent of Bungalow, a pretty genius analogy, I have to say).  But…Confession: I’m a little newer to ASW than Rachelle and membership for me still feels kind of special.

The Runaway Camera…

July 22nd, 2008 at 11:28 pm · 25 Comments

Hey New Yorkers,

Confession: I’ve been a shitty friend all day–or so that’s what Devorah claims in her latest text–because I’ve ignored her phone calls, emails, and previous texts. Here’s the deal: her camera’s gone missing.

INCOMING–>MISFIT: “Emily, Where Are Your Advertisers?”

July 22nd, 2008 at 9:42 pm · 1 Comment

Message:Emily, you have really done very well. Where are your advertisers? I read that Gawker piece of crap, and they have advertisers. You actually have a following (a real following as opposed to Gawker’s following which is fake). So where are they? Posting or writing every day is what makes the difference. Great job!

Essentially Asking: How Short is Too Short?

Hey New Yorkers, here’s something for you…

Essentially Asking: How Short is Too Short?

This picture was taken on Sunday during brunch–BRUNCH–at Hampton Coffee. Not even past 11. And there were families everywhere. It was Devorah who pointed her out. “LOOOOOK!” she hissed. Was Water Mill under attack?

Ex-Dalton Teacher Claims Her Private School Portrait is Fiction–And She’s Right!

July 22nd, 2008 at 10:41 am · 16 Comments

It was as if Mischa Barton and Rachel Bilson had wandered off the set of The O.C. in search of a couple of caramel macciatos. Mischa was wearing a slim, shredded jeans skirt that I knew was Chloe (I had seen it on the cover of Elle) and Rachel was wearing a Marni dress with an oversized pair of Chanel sunglasses…These were children I was here to mold and teach the ways of the world. These weren’t bitches. They were sad, misunderstood girls who didn’t know better. I was clearly in private-school territory.

-Anisha Lakhani, Schooled

Hey New Yorkers,

So, what does an ex-Dalton teacher really think of the New York City private school world?

Is there any truth to what she writes in her soon-to-be released book Schooled?

Fashion Pulses from Polo: YELLOW, YELLOW EVERYWHERE…Pastel Blues and Wedges Too

July 21st, 2008 at 4:45 pm · 2 Comments

Hey New Yorkers,

Yellow is the new black,” I was informed via Facebook message by my friend Stephanie Wei back in APRIL. APRIL! Why didn’t I blog about this back then? I’m a fool…

As I mentioned, people who attend polo in the Hamptons aren’t really there to watch the horses (no big surprise). People watching is the main activity and the tents are the main fields on which the ‘game’ is played. Polo itself revolves around it, creating a handsome perimeter that is occassionally acknowledged but is seldom a cause for distraction from the eye-catching fashions and poses of New York society’s movers and shakers. I had a lot of fun stepping back and taking in all of the fashion choices that day and all I can say is that YELLOW dresses are the ‘it’ thing. So too are wedges and pastels (soft baby blues and purples). But let’s focus on the issue of yellow, shall we?

It’s not that everyone is necessarily wearing yellow but rather that a bold yellow statement can be spotted in any scene.

Need more proof that yellow is now a trend? Check these PMC pages: Link 1  Link 2

Confession:  I’ve been wearing this color since early spring and it’s a little annoying to see it become ‘hot’ (although I guess I’m more annoyed with myself because I neglected to write about it when it was still surfacing back in April). A few weeks ago, I looked down and realized my friend’s toe nails were painted pastel yellow.

“It’s the hot color now,” she informed me.

Thanks…

VH1 Saves the Music, Goes to Private Dinner in East Hampton: Ne-Yo Who?

July 21st, 2008 at 12:55 pm · 6 Comments

[Left: A Beautiful Private Dinner for VH1 Save the Music at Jaci Reed's East Hampton Estate Winds Down]

Hey New Yorkers,

Do you know who Ne-Yo is?  Should I have known?

Confession: He came to dinner Friday and yes, I definitely had to ask who he was…

The more events I attend, the more acutely aware I’m becoming of my popular culture illiteracy. Most women I know my age watch a steady stream of reality television/sitcoms (to decompress) and they occassionally read entertainment/gossip (i.e. US Weekly). I don’t. It’s a time issue but I’m also not as interested in mainstream pop culture as I am in New York-specific content. Do I need to change? Are you surprised? Same thing happened at Paws for Style, actually. Other than Richard Belzer and Lauren Conrad, I didn’t know anyone–there were lots of reality stars in the line-up. I do know people in media, politics, business, finance, and many in fashion and society. Fur designer Dennis Basso, for example, was sitting one seat over from Devorah and me at the VH1 dinner and I recognized him immediately. It was a really fun night overall…just glad I had Devorah to tell me who everyone was;).

Credit, btw, goes to Susan Shin, whom I got to know much better this weekend and came away most impressed by how hard-working and hands-on she is with every event/client, despite how in-demand and successful her firm must be.

Yours, E

HEY NEW YORKERS, MISFIT HERE…Happy Monday!

It was a scorcher this weekend and out east, it wasn’t much cooler: So why, then, would my friends from Gossip Girl not want to partake in ‘resort’ fashion? Isn’t the upcoming season supposed to take place in the hamptons? I attended Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford’s birthday party Saturday night
